Why Skipping Web Page Testing Could Cost You Customers

Estimated read time 2 min read

There are between 12 and 24 million ecommerce sites today, and ecommerce is growing rapidly. While this growth is great for the industry overall, it also means more competition for those already involved in online shopping. Customers now have more choices than ever, so it’s no longer enough to just offer the lowest price or the fastest delivery time.

About 42 percent of users leave a site because it is not functional. By testing a product page before publishing it, you can keep nearly half of your potential customers from leaving.

Why Should You Test a Web Page Before Launching?

Web development can be time-consuming, especially if you have a large number of products. You might be tempted to skip the testing phase and simply hit “publish” to save time.

You’ve seen the website, right? The photos look great, and the pages load quickly. What could possibly go wrong?

There are many things to consider:

  • The speed of the page can vary depending on the user’s location, device, and internet connection.
  • You cannot afford to cut corners on security testing, especially if you handle payment transactions.
  • Adding a page to an existing website can create new bugs, so it’s important to test every page.
  • If you use extensions or plugins (such as WordPress/WooCommerce), integrations need to be tested regularly. For example, if you use the HubSpot WordPress plugin to track conversions, you should make sure it works across all of your pages.
  • Adding new pages to your catalog can lead to inconsistencies.

When launching an entirely new ecommerce site, you should (and can) run dozens of tests. However, adding a product page to an existing website is much simpler.

While I encourage everyone to test as thoroughly as possible, I understand that it’s not always feasible to spend weeks on each page. Here are the three most important tests to address the common UX problems your customers might encounter.
